I have a friend who can not spell worth a crap. He can spell as good as a 2nd grader and his girlfriend not much better. I seen'there kids social security card and they spelled his middle name Exavior. I have never heard of that and told them that it was wrong, and they should change it because It's gonna embarrass the boy that his middle name is not spelled correctly. She'said I named him after'st. Xavier, and I told her it was not spelled like that. Then'they said they seen'the name'spelled like that in baby name books. I have never'seen It'spelled like that before and am wondering if anyone else has. I think it looks ridiculous!

people always pronounce Xavier as X-Zavier, which seems silly to me because X is pronounced as a Z, not an X. We all learned that when we learned the alphabet, X is for xylophone. :) Even when I introduce our son as Xavier (pronounced Zavier), people say "ooooh! Hi X-Zavier." Seems as if we need to enroll our son as Zavier to get the pronunciation that we intended.

We named our son Xavier and love it. My wife is Latina and on that'side they all pronounce it as Javier, which is fine by me and warrants no correction. I do get people in the U.S. trying to correct me with my own son's name telling me it is EX-avier. Not. I politely ask them if they make copies on an EX-erox machine, know of the Graak character EX-erxes, or follow the basketball team from EX-avier University....all pronounced Zavier, of course. When'they name their son Xavier they can pronounce it however they want. ;)

I thought it was funny because I have one son named Xavier and one named Nathaniel. I agree, not the right meaning, my boys are 8 and 6 now but I know that is not what I had read for Xavier originally.. . I swear a book had said "Warrior." Only now looking because my oldest daughter is questioning all of their meanings. . . P.S. my oldest is Bryan Xavier. (his father's first name). Xavier Bryan just didn't sound right, but everybody has been ok with going by the middle name!!

We named our son Xavier. We pronounce it "Zay-Vee-Er" as we understand that this is the classic pronounciation. I also think it rolls off the tongue better. I have to admit, however, that my initial exposure (and attraction) to the name began with those who pronounced it "Ex-Zay-Vee-Er" (e.g., Professor Xavier from the X-Men, Xavier McDaniel from the'seattle Supersonics). Also, my grandmother's name is Frances, so I like to think that his name works as an indirect tribute to her as well (Frances = Francis Xavier = Xavier).

We pronounce it Zay-vee-er and are sure to correct people who call him otherwise. Here there is an Xavier University and St. Xavier High School. Everyone here says "Zavier" and said I'mispronounce it. Besides the'stereotype that Americans tend to butcher words of any language they come across, perhaps the excuse in this case is the mass marketing campaign in the early Δ±80s involving a particular gentlemanΔ±s signature that is tattooed on the behind of every authentic Cabbage Patch doll in existence. If you notice, the popularity of this name began to increase a short time after Mr. Rober'sΔ± Cabbage Patch dolls were selling off of shelves like there was no tomorrow, especially around the time that the target market began to approach child-bearing age. It could be just a coincidence. Another'said trait of Americans is to go with names they recognize and this certainly qualifies because of the Cabbage Patch craze. This stereotypical trait explains not only why they choose the baby names they do, but also why they vote for whom they do. I am considering this for my sonΔ±s name because it is a nice name with a lot of character and is still somewhat unique.

My sons name is Exavier, its a good strong name and not very common. We pronounce it "Ex-Zay-Vee-Er" we are also hispanic and some family members pronounce it "Xa-Vee-Er" just like Javier but with an "X". we only hope he grows up to love it as much as we do, sense people will be pronouncing it in many ways.

My name is Xavier and I pronounce it X-avier. It doesn't matter how the hell the name is spelled It's just how the person wants it to be pronounced. I have to say since I like it pronounced X and not Z, when people call me Zavier it gets a little annoying but i've learned to live with it. So therefor MY name is not ZAVIER It's XAVIER! Plus I love having X as a nickname!

I will be naming my son Xavier pronounced (ex-zavier) as in Charles Xavier from X-Men. I think if You're going to pronounce it Zavier then spell it with a Z and so on like if you want It'spanish sounding then Javier. It doesn't have to be hyphen'ted to pronounce the X as "ex". I really think It's just a preference. I want the name to sound more American so I choose "ex-zavier"

My son's name is Xavier. I know that in English any word beginning with an X is pronounced with a Z sound. Also, being from NYC, i've always known Xavier to be pronounced as Zavier, but quiet frankly, depending on my mood and the language that I'm speaking, I pronounce my sonΔ±s name as Ex-zavier, Zavier, Ha-vier, or just plain old X-man (listed in preferred order). I think when he's old enough to choose, he will. Knowing a little something about the evolution of language (esp. the English language), I also beli've that there is not a "right way" but a standard (or popular) way to pronounce any name. Yes, Δ±todayΔ±, the Δ±ZΔ± pronunciation may be the Δ±correctΔ± way of saying Xavier, but Δ±tomorrowΔ± the emphasis maybe placed on the Δ±XΔ± sound. Folks just need to respect how the "owner" of the name chooses to say it. How they pronounce their name will have nothing to do with ignorance, but everything to do with choice. cnc

This is a great name! As you can probably tell, it is my name. I, however, spell my name DaiSha. The "a" sound is long, and people often say "Oh, like daisy." It was very unique, but I once thought it was too unique. Now, my husband and I have given our three girls even more unique names than mine, and I'm okay okay with that now. Very rarely do people pronounce my name correctly at first glance; they'll always say D-Shay or Deja, and it did bother me. I began to just correct them politely by answering their salutations "This is DaiSha" or "It's DaiSha--just change the 'y' to 'i' and add -sha." It's who I am now and I love it!!!

My husband and I named our son Xavier (pronouced the Arabic way, X-A-VEE-ER) and were promptly "corrected" by my husands snobby brother who told us that it is pronounced as ZA-VEE-ER (latin). I'must say it felt good to tell Mr. Know-it-all brother-in-law that he was a short-sighted idiot and he'should expand his knowledge regarding the many different pronunciations and meanings of a name. We let our son decide which way he wants his name pronounced, but mostly he is just called "X", "X-Man" "Zavee" or "Zav", he also likes "X-Ray". He loves his name and the fact that it has different pronunciations. He will often meet new people and give them a different pronunciation just because they are all his name and he likes them all.

Great name and it is pronounced as if the X was a Z. That is how X is pronounced! Its a very common middle name among Catholics, typically with the first name Francis because of St. Francis Xavier. A lot of Irish and Italian-Americans named "Frank" have a given name of "Francis Xavier"

In basc, the language of our country (Basc Country, in Spain) means "the new house". So, the'saint was Francisco from the new house. The fact that a horrible man owned this name has forever ruined it for othe's. If a white boy for example was named Adolf, then his classmates learn in school about the Nazis, he would get picked on, and could even be at the end of a horrible hate crime. This could ruin the child's life. I would never name my child this. Even if the parents are not racist and just liked the name, othe's will not know that. And this could backfire in the parent's faces as well in the form of vandalI'm, threats, and much worse crimes.

It is weird how English speaking people are unable to prounce a simple "x" word like that when'they have no problem with xylophone. Most people in the U.S have the grammar abilities of a fifth grade child ( check local news "journalists" as an example..). The first person on national tv to mispronounce Xavier was Archie Bunker...when he did so ,the educated audience( compared to today's illiterates)roared in laughter at his gaffe. They ALL knew it was incorrect. Bunker mangled many words for his skits. It was all part of his "uneducated" character.
