This is a name from Alaska. Michael Maxomovitch Kadin was a cartographer and ships pilot educated in Sitka and St. Petersburg. There is Kadin Island near Wrangell and the'stikine, Kadin Lake, Kadin Vents etc in Alaska...and being Alaskan that is why I named my son this. Plus, being a map collector the cartographer part means something to me, being from Sitka, that means something to me and my husband use to work on boats in areas MM Kadin charted and piloted through meant something to him. There are businesses and buildings called Kadin I know in southe'st Alaska. I had never known or heard of anyone using the name for a child before. But now, I hear it all the time down here in the lower 48...though not spelled the'same so clearly not named for the'same person or reasons. Part of me feels bad about this because his name is more common than I thought. I didn't think to look up the name using different spellings...since we finally thought about using the name within 24 hours of his birth.
I used to know a girl named Bess who I really liked--she was good-looking, smart, and artistic. I think her given name was Elizabeth. Anyway, I like this name--gentle and feminine, but with a strong B sound at the beginning to add stren'th.
