She changed it because the American's couldn't pronounce it correctly. The "c" is not pronounced like a "K". It's just as the person explained above, the "c" is like "T'S". The reason for the varios pronouncations is because the'slavic alphabet has more letters and different sounds, so if You're not slavic you probably won't pronounce it correctly, unless you were told.

Growing up I hated the name, but luckily everyone calls me Jennie - which in itself gets people confused because the first letters are not the'same - I would not, however, go by Genny - it looks like "guh-enny" and would lead to many issuese by people who couldn't figure it out - and there are many of them.
