What does Muriel mean?
Muriel is a traditionally Irish name; derives from muir, "sea", and geal, "clear, bright, resplendent". She is the woman "bright as the sea".
Origin of the name Muriel
The name Muriel is of Gaelic origin and was originally written as Muirgheal in Irish and Muireall in Scots Gaelic. Various versions have long been evident in the Breton, Irish and Scottish Gaelic languages. The name was very common in medieval England, usually in the form of "Merial", and unusually for a name of Celtic origin it was still common after the Norman Conquest, although rare from around 1300. It remains common in Scotland as Muriel, the name in this form, was reintroduced to England in the mid-19th century, facilitated by Dinah Craik's 1856 novel John Halifax, Gentleman Whose Title Character's Daughter Is Named Muriel; Born in 1802, Muriel is said to be named "after John's mother's rather peculiar name."
