Olive is the English vocabulary word for a type of tree from the Latin "olive". The olive tree is an emblem of peace, for example when one "extends an olive branch". The root of this can be found in the Bible (Genesis 8:11) when a dove returned to Noah after the great flood subsided with an olive leaf. Thus, the olive leaf became a symbol of the imminence of peace. The olive tree was also sacred to the Greek goddess Athena; that it was her gift to the people of Athens in a contest among the gods to decide who would become the city's name. The olive tree serves many uses (wood scraps, olive oil, medicinal benefits, olive leaf and olive fruit) and so it was chosen as the most useful gift. As a feminine name, Oliva dates back to at least the days of the early Roman empire. It was in use in Italy as evidenced by a 2nd century Saint Oliva of Brescia who was martyred during the rule of Emperor Hadrian. There was also a 9th century legend of a thirteen year old girl named Oliva from Palermo, Sicily, who was kidnapped by Muslims and taken to Tunisia (North Africa) and confined to a cave. Olivia - whatever name sounds like it - was a female given name creation by William Shakespeare (for more on this story, see Olivia's name). Olivia is a very popular name among English speakers today, while the shorter two-syllable Olive is less. The olive name is more popular today in Australia.

Popularity
Interestingly, back in the late 1800's and early 1900's Olive was actually quite a bit more popular than Olivia. The opposite is true today. It was in 1934 when Olivia first surpassed Olive in use. Olivia is one of the most popular American baby names today, while Oliva has had a hard time hanging on the charts. As you can see in the chart below, Olive was a Top 100 favorite in the early part of the 20th century, but quickly fell out of fashion as the decades progressed. In 1951, the name Olive disappeared completely from the female naming tables. Its rest of use would last more than 50 years. It was not until this century, in the year 2007, that Oliva returned to the American consciousness. Not surprisingly, a year earlier, in 2006, An independent film from Sundance called "Little Miss Sunshine" was released to delighted audiences across America. The film's central character is a quirky seven-year-old cutie-pie named Olive, who is a refreshingly untrained contestant in a beauty pageant called "Little Miss Sunshine." Viewers couldn't help but fall in love with Oliva and the following year the name re-entered the women's charts. Oliva got another surge of interest when actress Isla Fisher and her avant-garde comedic husband Sacha Baron Cohen named their first child Olive in 2007. Although most Americans prefer the increasingly popular and possibly excessive Olivia for her daughters, olive is a cute and sweet alternative (perhaps less pretentious and a bit more vintage). It cuts a very long name of four syllables down to two while retaining the inherent “old lady” charm of the name. Liv and Ollie are possible nicknames. We'd be remiss if we didn't mention the old-fashioned association with Olivia, Popeye's big-legged, skinny, sometimes fickle girlfriend (but this is becoming a date reference people no longer seem to take into account). In any case, when we think of the name of olive, we only think: Olive you!

We are expecting and have already decided if the baby is a girl her name will be Olive. It's a twist on Olivia and she won't be one of 5 in her class with the same name. If only I could find a middle name I like to go with it.
