People pronounce it wrong all the time. I hated it as a child. But as an adult noone ever forgets me when'they meet me. I love my name, very unique and fun.
Una is also a Serbian name (of course pronnounced as Oona) and It's the name of a river which runs through Bosna and Croatia.
Its my baby's name. She is 1 year old now. Her full name is Una ❤️iaurė, ❤️iaurė means North. I am from Lithuania :)
my new grandaughter been named una pronounced oona but i always think of una stubbs worzle gummages girlfriend ,looks like it will be pronouced wrong all her life . not my choice of names
I'm going to name my daughter Una, it just came to me like a day or so after I found out I was pregnant. When I looked it up it can mean "One" or "Lamb", and one definition said it descended from the name "Agnes", and I thought, "but those are just two different names".. I remember the movie "Legend" from the 80's used to be one of my favorIt's and I thought the fairy name Oona was so pretty. The only person I told other than my husband was a doctor and she was like "That's different !". Lol. Well I don't want my baby to have the'same name as a bazillion other babies, because yeah, she is different !
Cool name which deserves a revival in both England and the United States, while currently popular in Ireland (so I beli've). Some parents would name a first daughter of theirs Una, as it is the Latin (also Italian/Spanish/Portuguese) feminine word for "number one". This name may make a young girl stand apart from all those little Emilys and Emmas in the U.S. nurseries.
I'm 54 this year, and Una is my name ... Occasionally some clown at school would try to tease me about my name with "Ooooh-nahh", but if looks could kill, well, it didn't last long, and they'd find somone else to try and get a rise out of, haha. My mum says that my father chose my name - I'm the youngest of three, and the name is Latin, meaning "the One", i.e.the "last" one, lol. For example 'for eternity, we will be one'= Una in perpetuum. ... and my favourite is the tale of Una and the Lion from The Faerie Queene - an incomplete epic poem written by Edmund Spenser 1590-1596. In Spenser's "Letter of the Authors," he'states that the entire epic poem is "cloudily enwrapped in allegorical devices," and that the aim of publishing The Faerie Queene was to ❤️fashion a gentleman or noble person in virtuous and gentle discipline.❤️ Una, the personification of the "True Church", travels with the Redcross Knight whom she has recruited to save her parents' castle from a dragon (reptile). She also defeats Duessa, who represents the "false" (Catholic) church and the person of Mary, Queen of Scots, in a trial reminiscent of that which ended in Mary's beheading. Una is representative of Truth, and this is really me today - it feels right, and I love it! =)
my name is una. it was my aunts name and i never liked it when i was a kid. i like it better now because no one else has it. i pronounce it you-na.some people say oonah and i correct them. no one ever gets it right. i would never want anyone named after me because it has been a hassel.

My name is Una (you-nah) I'm 26, I love my name. People tend to call me Ooo-nah but I don't mind anymore. It used to bother me but i've accepted it and just use that as my name as well. I'm named after my grandmother and my great grandmother who are Scottish. It's also my older'sister, and nieces middle names. We are keeping it in the family.
my mom's name is Una and she pronounces it U na where most people pronounce is "oona"
This is my name but instead of Alison or Allison I spell it Alisson. People spell my name wrong a lot, but I dont care cuz my name is awesome, or like my bgf's my name is beast. When I was in elementry school they started getting used to it, but now in 6th grade they spell it wrong. Oh well. My friends also call me Ali. I think my name is totally beautiful. I thank my bro's everyday for picking it. There is only like 4 people with the name Alison/Alisson/Allison/ect. in my grade after the 4 schools in my town joined together @ the middle school.(That's what hapeens in my middle school.) Anyway Alison/Alisson/Allison/ect.'s totally rock the world.
My name is Una... I hate being called Ooona to me It's like someone being called Tony and calling them Pony ❤️❤️
I use to hate my name growing up. I am from backwoods kentucky and I know it was my aunts name but I'm not sure how she got it. I really like it now because it is different and It'suits me. We pronounce it you-nah. I like it better that way. I would not want anyone to name there kid after me though. No one pronounces it the'same way and after a while you get tired of correcting them.
Our daughter is named Una, after the river Una in Bosnia. We love the name and it fits nicely to our one year old princess.
I am a una pronounced you-na, my mother is a una and It's a family name from Ireland. I'm glad to hear of so many other unas from so many different places, because I grew up feeling like the odd one out and now I am not.
our daughter is named Una after the girl in Anne of Green Gables. it was a name I loved since I was little and first read the book. also our daughter's great-grandmother is Serbian so the name connects to her heritage since it is a name for girls there. Fun fact: Una and the Lion is a famous coin that is considered one of the most beautiful coins ever created.
I named my daughter Una-Sophia after my mother, and in fact it goes back five generations on my mother's side of the family. We pronounce it Oona and of course think it is a beautiful feminine name.
My name is Una, and I'm from Serbia. I love my name because It's unique and really rare... It's soo cool when I see so many girls from all over the world who share my name :) I wish u all good luck :)
I am Una (yoo na) and named after my grandmother Euny. My parents did not like the'spelling and Una Merkle was a big movie star. I never met another Una until I was about 30. I have now met about a dozen, all but one pronouncing yoo na. My grandmother was of English origin, in Missouri (pronounced MissourAH). At about age 50 I finally came to ter's with it and now rather like it. My middle name is even more odd - Estora.
This is my name and I pronounce it X-a-vee-er. Its spelled Xavier but people still either call me Javier or pronounce it Zavier or Xzayvier. I usually get awesome comments and tons of Compliments. They figure that I am named after the Missionary Saint Francis Xavier or the University or something.
I like name Una, pronaunced "oona". I thougt it is only serbian / bosnian name, because of the river in Bosnia, which is probably the most beautiful river in Europe. But as I have seen it is very cosmopolitan name. Una = "the only one" or "unique". I hope, my daughter will get name Una.
I'm called una, i love my name'so much because its quirky, like me. :)
My name is Una (which we pronounce you na). Unfortunately most people pronounce it "oo na" which I dislike. I have met a couple of people with this name and they pronounced it the'same way I do. It has been spelled as Yna which I found odd and annoying. Of course, I found it very hard to pronounce when spelled that way.
We named our DD Kayli and we absolutely love it! i've actually been wanting to name my DD Kayli since high school and i've never heard of anyone with the'same spelling of this name. And i've never heard of the'song people are mentioning...I'may need to look it up.
Una is my name and I pronounce it 'oona'. I was named after my aunt and have never met anyone other than her with my name. As a child, I hated the name - it was too different and stood out among all the Marys and the Debbies and the Kathys. Also, I was a bit chubby and the kids called me 'Una Baloona'. My mom gave all her kids (4 of us) names that could stand independently of a surname but nothing weird like 'Apple' or 'Dweezil'. I have grown into my name (and out of the baby fat!) and I LOVE it. My daughters, though they love me, have told me that they doubt they'd name any future daughters after me. So I stand alone!
This was my grandpa's middle name and I have always loved it. It'sounds very fancy:)
My name is Una, an old gaelic name I inherited from my granny Una from Donegal, Ireland. In irish It'should be pronounced Oona as this is correct in irish and spelled Una with a fada above the U. Any other pronunciation or variation is not irish. It derives from the word lamb in Irish. Other pronunciations youna is English variations and other'spellings oona or oonagh derives from the wife of Finn McCool. This name is an irish Gaelic name and should be kept this way
My name is Una too! My family calls me U-na growing up but my teache's and schoolmates always called me oona and this is how it has been since then ... I introduce myself as oona since that's the Irish pronunciation but whether people call me U na or oona, I don't even pay anymore attention.
I named my daughter Una because It's terrific name
This is my 10 month old daughter's name. I love that It's old fashioned without being old lady. It's not terribly popular, but at the'same time not a name that people have never heard of. Though when people ask her name, they often'think I am saying "Natalie".
I have this name and too tell you the truth I think It's a very unique name! Most people think it rhymes with tuna or luna but whatever I least I have a better name then'them. And yes people have the tendency to misprounonce it! I am 14 years old, but I love my name!
My soon to be born daughter's middle name is going to be Una, pronaunced "oona". It is the name of beautiful river located partly in Croatia and mostly in Bosnia. The river was given'the name Una by the Romans, because of its unique beauty.
Una is the name of the heroine in Spenser's Fairie Queen and also the Red Cross Knight, St George's Lady. Just a bit of trivia.
My mother is Korean, so my name is pronounced the Korean way, kind of between "uh-na" and "oo-na". Pronounced this way, a lot of people think It'sounds pretty. However most everyone says Una with a long u sound, so it becomes oo-na, which I really dislike, but oh well.
Love it! The most beautiful name ever and coincidentally my daughter's name :)
My baby cousin from Japan is named Una. Pretty name i love her!
I know a woman named Oonagh, and I absolutely love her name, and her personality. I guess having an uncommon female name myself I can appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of her name as well. She'stands out in a crowd and is a strong, bold woman. I am considering naming my child this if it is a girl. It is a true, unique name, not some silly misspelling of a common name made to look special.
Well my name is Paige & people often spell it wrong. They spell it like page in a book & I tell them that to know the difference they need to know the Page in a book & the Paige in person is. I know that all Paiges are sweet & and kind.
My name is una and i pronounce it as oona....and not yoouna ....It'should be pronounced as oona as there is a fada above the U, (which i can't do on the computer!) as in the Irish language and this is what makes It'sound like oona instead of yoouna. I dont understand why some people spell it the English way 'oonagh' as it is an Irish name! I love my name and am proud it is Irish, therefore, when i am writing, i always use the fada above the U.
If I ever give birth to a girl, her name is definately going to be UNA! :) In Bosnia, this name is pronounced "oona" ;) I love it!
I am 26 Years old & i love my name. I think una is a lovely name
I too am called Una (pronounced OO-na)and get many compliments on my name. I grew up in Scotland and as a child my name was often mispronounced by teache's as You-na and I hated having to correct people. Now as an adult I love it and am proud of my Irish connections
I'm called una, and I'm pretty sure its irish, like me. c:
Love the name Love being "unique" Love Guinness Land
My name is Una and I was reading that a lot of people on here say that they didn't like their name growing up but I'm 13 and I have really loved the name, because I think It's a unique name and I love It's meanings, my name is Una Valentine so it means "One love". Una's other meanings are: Lamb(Gaelic), One or Unity(English), White Wave(Celtic and Welsh) and Remember (Hopi Native American).
People often pronounce my name "Oona" but I don't like that unless the person is Irish as that is how it is pronounced there. Pronounced with an Irish accent it has a lovely musical lilt to it. It is a very uncommon name and I often'tell people that the othe's have all died out as it was more popular long ago. I enjoyed the fact that I was the only one in the class(or school for that matter) with that name, yet there was an older girl living on the'same street called Una too. My parents gave me the name because they liked it and it was a name that couldn't be shortened or lend It'self to a nickname....but they under'stimated children. My Mum's name was Ena, which is very similar. It is so easy to spell:never had any problems there. I like the name now but it can be a problem having a name that no one has ever heard of. I named my own daughters Katie, Laura, twins Caroline and Julia....names that are familiar but that is another'story. I like it because it is unique.
my daughter is named Una after the character in the anne of green gables series. also we liked it because her grandmother is Serbian and it is a name for girls there.
My name is Una and I come from Latvia! I allways thougt that it is just Latin, but as I read here, I understand that it have lot of different meanings from all over the world! :)
I love this name, It'sounds so unique and there's just something about it.
Under the'sea I am a big octopus wiht squishy tentecles. I am EVIL and wil steal your voice if you are a red headed mermaid named Ariel! I eat flounder for breakfast!!!
My name also is Una and I'm from Latvia. I really like my name because it't inter'sting.
My name is Una and I pronounce it with a long U (You-na). Like many of the other Unas above, I am constantly called Oona and it bothe's me to no end, especially when I introduce myself correctly. It just goes to show you that people do not really listen. I find it extremely rude. I love my name now but as I child I was teased quite a lot because the name is so unusual. I'm from Scotland and the'scots beli've Una is Gaelic for Hannah, Agnes and Winnifred, however, I do beli've the name probably came from the Latin. I'm very excited to see the name is given in many countries.
Una is a beautiful Faerie Queene representing truth and unity. Check out the painting of "Una and the Lion" by Briton Riviere.
I have this name and too tell you the truth I think It's a very unique name! Most people think it rhymes with tuna or luna but whatever I least I have a better name then'them. And yes people have the tendency to misprounonce it! I am 14 years old!
Una is a beautiful and very traditional but unused name.
My parents are from Brittany, France, and gave me the Breton variation of this name - Youna. While I despised it as a child, I feel I have grown into it, and it now forms a central part of my identity.
I have seen other meanings of this name. It is said to mean a 'lamb'. Also 'one born in a famine' and is the Italian word for one (feminine). It is a pretty name I think.
My name is Una and I pronounce it "Yoo-na". Growing up, teache's would always say my name wrong and call me ooo-na. I cringed whenever they did that. I think yoona sounds better then ooona personally. I have grown to like my name, it is unique and easy to remember.
As an Irish name it is sometimes Anglicized as Juno, Unity, Winifred, or Agnes. The last two of these four names, unfortunately, sound utterly DISGUSTING! However, Una wouldn't be so bad.
I think Una is a really pretty name. my grandpa breeds show cattle and there was one beautiful little female that i called her Una. i think it is pronounced oona, i have never heard it pronounced youna
Una is my daughter's name, pronounce "oona". She's 3 1/2. I think the name feels international - is a word in the Italian and Spanish languages, a city in Brazil, a river in Bulgaria, and in Edmund Spencer's epic poem Faerie Queen, Una represents truth and saves the Red Cross Knight.
My name is Una. I am of Irish descent, and my understanding is that the gaelic pronounciation is oo-na. The English name Una name is a derivative of the latin word unus, meaning "one" or "whole" (as in unanimous or united). Accordingly, the anglicized pronounciation of the name is yoo-na. I like this name because its unique, and while it is considered a gaelic name, its much easier for people outside of Ireland to pronounce and spell than some other names (i.e. Mairead - my poor sister' name)! I like both the gaelic and latin-derived pronounciation (I go with the gaelic oo-na). Whether the gaelic and latin versions are related is unclear to me. So far, i've been'told that in modern Irish Una means, "famine" or "hunger," and that in Irish lore, Una was a tragic heroine, who pined away and died after being forbidden'to see her lover. Not very inspiring!! If these reports are true, I definately like the latin meaning better!!!
In the later books of the L.M. Montgomery 'Anne of Green Gables' series, there is a character named Una. She was one of my favorite characters. I think that I would name my daughter Una now.
I haven heard of the name before until i saw Aeon Flex her lil sis's name was una and I thought it was beautiful :)
My name is Oona. I was unique growing up. I hated as child, but looove it now! I am v. unique - people "remember" my name, and *me* LOL. Its a strong but soft name. :) The orignial iron hand in the velvet glove - great for a girl today. You'll go far with Oona/Una/Oonagh as your name!
