I'm going to name my daughter Una, it just came to me like a day or so after I found out I was pregnant. When I looked it up it can mean "One" or "Lamb", and one definition said it descended from the name "Agnes", and I thought, "but those are just two different names".. I remember the movie "Legend" from the 80's used to be one of my favorIt's and I thought the fairy name Oona was so pretty. The only person I told other than my husband was a doctor and she was like "That's different !". Lol. Well I don't want my baby to have the'same name as a bazillion other babies, because yeah, she is different !

Cool name which deserves a revival in both England and the United States, while currently popular in Ireland (so I beli've). Some parents would name a first daughter of theirs Una, as it is the Latin (also Italian/Spanish/Portuguese) feminine word for "number one". This name may make a young girl stand apart from all those little Emilys and Emmas in the U.S. nurseries.

I'm 54 this year, and Una is my name ... Occasionally some clown at school would try to tease me about my name with "Ooooh-nahh", but if looks could kill, well, it didn't last long, and they'd find somone else to try and get a rise out of, haha. My mum says that my father chose my name - I'm the youngest of three, and the name is Latin, meaning "the One", i.e.the "last" one, lol. For example 'for eternity, we will be one'= Una in perpetuum. ... and my favourite is the tale of Una and the Lion from The Faerie Queene - an incomplete epic poem written by Edmund Spenser 1590-1596. In Spenser's "Letter of the Authors," he'states that the entire epic poem is "cloudily enwrapped in allegorical devices," and that the aim of publishing The Faerie Queene was to ❤️fashion a gentleman or noble person in virtuous and gentle discipline.❤️ Una, the personification of the "True Church", travels with the Redcross Knight whom she has recruited to save her parents' castle from a dragon (reptile). She also defeats Duessa, who represents the "false" (Catholic) church and the person of Mary, Queen of Scots, in a trial reminiscent of that which ended in Mary's beheading. Una is representative of Truth, and this is really me today - it feels right, and I love it! =)

Una is my name and I pronounce it 'oona'. I was named after my aunt and have never met anyone other than her with my name. As a child, I hated the name - it was too different and stood out among all the Marys and the Debbies and the Kathys. Also, I was a bit chubby and the kids called me 'Una Baloona'. My mom gave all her kids (4 of us) names that could stand independently of a surname but nothing weird like 'Apple' or 'Dweezil'. I have grown into my name (and out of the baby fat!) and I LOVE it. My daughters, though they love me, have told me that they doubt they'd name any future daughters after me. So I stand alone!

My name is Una, an old gaelic name I inherited from my granny Una from Donegal, Ireland. In irish It'should be pronounced Oona as this is correct in irish and spelled Una with a fada above the U. Any other pronunciation or variation is not irish. It derives from the word lamb in Irish. Other pronunciations youna is English variations and other'spellings oona or oonagh derives from the wife of Finn McCool. This name is an irish Gaelic name and should be kept this way

People often pronounce my name "Oona" but I don't like that unless the person is Irish as that is how it is pronounced there. Pronounced with an Irish accent it has a lovely musical lilt to it. It is a very uncommon name and I often'tell people that the othe's have all died out as it was more popular long ago. I enjoyed the fact that I was the only one in the class(or school for that matter) with that name, yet there was an older girl living on the'same street called Una too. My parents gave me the name because they liked it and it was a name that couldn't be shortened or lend It'self to a nickname....but they under'stimated children. My Mum's name was Ena, which is very similar. It is so easy to spell:never had any problems there. I like the name now but it can be a problem having a name that no one has ever heard of. My name is Una. I am of Irish descent, and my understanding is that the gaelic pronounciation is oo-na. The English name Una name is a derivative of the latin word unus, meaning "one" or "whole" (as in unanimous or united). Accordingly, the anglicized pronounciation of the name is yoo-na. I like this name because its unique, and while it is considered a gaelic name, its much easier for people outside of Ireland to pronounce and spell than some other names (i.e. Mairead - my poor sister' name)! I like both the gaelic and latin-derived pronounciation (I go with the gaelic oo-na). Whether the gaelic and latin versions are related is unclear to me. So far, i've been'told that in modern Irish Una means, "famine" or "hunger," and that in Irish lore, Una was a tragic heroine, who pined away and died after being forbidden'to see her lover. Not very inspiring!! If these reports are true, I definately like the latin meaning better!!!
