I am a Mary Catherine, born in 1949 when'there were a LOT of Catherine s of many spellings. I go by Cathy and when I give it to someone to either write down or enter in a computer, I say: "Cathy with a C". In the age of computers, it is mot wise to have someone go by their middle name. Cathy is a hard name for children'to master.They say:"Caffy" or "Cabby", etc. Only one of my 6 siblings had his sons say my name correctly from the outset. he'said to his 1.5 year old sons:"Watch my lips"; they got it right! Unless you plan on raising a very pious Mary Catherine, I would not recommend that combination. Many times when I have to give my full, legal name, someone says "Oh, like a nun❤️" I sometimes suspect that my parents were going to call me "Mary Catherine" all the time but after they started raising what they considered to be an obnoxious baby, decided to drop the Mary on a regular basis.
My youngest daughter is called Cathy. I'm Catherine and go by Cathy. I think I would have much preferred to go by Cat, if given'the choice. To me, Cathy conveys a middle aged woman who loves gossip, a "Chatty Cathy".
