I am Jeannie. I'm 56. I like my name because It's not common and It's also not ugly and old fashioned like Bertha or Edna or Doris, etc. BUT people often see It'spelled and think It's Jeanine. I have never met anyone who spells it Genie...that is the "thing" that comes out of a lamp after 3 rubs!!
Some people may think this is an adoption of the word 'genie' (indicating a spiritual being who comes out of a lamp after it is possessed and then rubbed by an ordinary human and then does what that person has told him to do), but actually it is either a short form of Eugenie or a respelling of Jeanie or Jeannie (both pet forms of Jean and sometimes used independently).
