Popular name in the late 19th and early 20th centuries among Jewish-Americans but seems quite old-fashioned nowadays. Irving Berlin is its most famous bearer of recent decades.

Some people call me Edwin, Irwin, Irvine, Oiving, Irvin, Eri, Ivin, or Erwin, or Evin. At first I got frustrated at the mispronunciation, but I have come to ignore them. Instead, I allow people to call me by these names because it allows me to recognize who is calling me and make it easier on them. However, I do correct people on the'spelling and I tell them I'm "Er-VinG" and not "Er-Vin" because I'm not a lover of the'sea. LOL!!! As for people sharing my name, in my neighborhood there was an increase in my name being used (though it is used in variation, since the people did not know how to spell it or pronounce it correctly). I found out that many women in my neighborhood named their children after me because they admire my intelligence and character during my elementary years. So yeah.. that is my experience with my name.
