The name derives from the Latin "moon", which is a contraction of "lucina" which means " shine" and "illuminate". The name Luna refers to the satellite that revolves around the Earth. Asil Luna literally means "she who shines".
Luna is a female name that comes from the Marian devotion to Our Lady of the Luna, which is venerated in various towns in Madrid, Huelva and Cordoba. It is said that a shepherd from the town of Pedroche found his image at the beginning of the 15th century and, thanks to this, the Supreme Pontiff ordered the construction of a modest hermitage, which has now been reformed and enlarged. The towns of Pozoblanco and Villanueva de Cordoba share a brotherhood with statutes from 1877, although it is claimed that their cult is much earlier.
