It was my paternal grandmother's name (born 1894) and she named her eldest daughter that, as was the custom at the time. She told me once (my grandmother) that'she hated the name. Guess tradition compelled her to name her daughter that. Aunt Mabel still alive at 87 and doing well. Jill Marie

I frequently have people correcting the'spelling of someone I know called Mable. They insist It's Mabel. On rare occasions, I run into someone who knows a Mable.

Mabel is bad enough, never mind Mable.
