Mable is a variant of Mabel and is deeply rooted in love and affection. Its meaning, "lovable," is in the truest sense a reflection of the adoration and love that accompanies a new child. This makes Mable not just an identity, but also a sentiment, a lively embodiment of parents' affection.

It was my paternal grandmother's name (born 1894) and she named her eldest daughter that, as was the custom at the time. She told me once (my grandmother) that'she hated the name. Guess tradition compelled her to name her daughter that. Aunt Mabel still alive at 87 and doing well. Jill Marie

Mabel is bad enough, never mind Mable. Even if old-fashioned names are making a comeback such as Hazel and Violet...well mind you, by the 2030s and 2040s they'd have fallen by the wayside again and parents would once more be turning to the names of the baby-boomer era such as Barbara, Linda, and Nancy. I think the "Victorian phase" has more or less reached the end of the road now as that has been going on for the past decade and has begun showing its stale side.
My first name is Mable....pronounced "May-bull". I have always hated the name. It is old-fashioned and outdated even when I was a child. I was named after an aunt named Mable. I have always used my middle name. However, the old fashioned names are making a comeback like Hazel and Violet. You never know.
