Additional name description Major
Additional name description Major

Major is a military rank of commissioned officer, with corresponding ranks existing in many military forces, awarded to a specialized executive or operations officer commanding battalion-sized units of 300 to 1,200 soldiers. When used unhyphenated, along with other gauges, the rank is only higher than that of an army captain and just below the rank of lieutenant colonel. He is considered the youngest of the field officer ranks. In some armies, notably France and Ireland, the rank of major is known as major, while in others it is known as captain-major. It is also used in some police forces and other paramilitary structures, such as the New York State Police, the New Jersey State Police, and several others. As a police rank, the Major roughly corresponds to the rank of UK Superintendent. When used hyphenated or combined, the term may also imply seniority at other rank levels, including major-general or major-general, denoting a mid-level general officer, and sergeant major, denoting the highest noncommissioned officer of a Military unit.

Could be classed as the grandad-ish version of Marjorie. Yet there are female majors (sometimes called majorettes) as well as male ones. There is also the other meaning of major, which is "big" (like "minor" means "little").

I work for a lady who named her'son Major. When I first heard it, I thought it was a hard name for a little boy to have, but now i think it is a neat name for a boy.
