Nasir is a name of Arabic origin and means "helper, supporter". Although Nasir is not as popular in the Western world as he is in the Arabic-speaking world, he has achieved crossover appeal within the African-American community in the United States. This was influenced by the rise in fame of a New York rapper named Nasir Bin Olu Dara Jones, better known simply as “Nas”. Nas first arrived on the American hip-hop music scene in the year 1994 and has since released multiple top-selling, critically acclaimed albums since then and has propelled him to international fame. Nas is also known for his public feud with Jay-Z, a "war of words" that went on for almost 10 years before the two rappers finally reconciled.
Popularity
The name Nasir first appeared on the American male naming charts in 1996 (just as Nas' rap career was taking off). In the first 10 years, the name saw impressive jumps in usage as the rapper became more and more famous. However, this sudden and abrupt pop culture influence is now clearly on the wane; it has been falling in popularity since 2006. Today the name is rarely used at best and the decline in use over the past two years has been more dramatic. However, Nasir is both cool and confident and is still a great choice of name. We like the nickname “Nas” – it has a nice, laid-back tone to it. The Arabic etymology of the name (meaning the helper) also brings a certain friendliness to Nasir.

Actually, my dog is named for the rapper Nas; his original family named him that (as a puppy, he would sit in front of their stereo and listen only when'they were playing a Nas album). I know nothing about the rapper, but my dog's family pronounced it "Nahz" without telling me how it was spelled, so I spelled it as Naz. Now It's all over his records and It's too late to change!
It is my son's name and no one has had problems pronouncing it thus far!
my son's name is "Nasiere", so we pronounce it like the french way (na' sea air) although now, since we have converted to muslim, my husband pronounces it more the arabic way - but either way, same meaning - god's son. Most people have a hard time pronouncing it at first, and they think it is a girls name (which doesn't help that our son has nice curly hair!) but we think it is a very unique name and he will be happy that he has it.
My son's name is Naasir Isaiah. A representation of my religion an my husbands. He is eleven now and really lives up to the meaning protector/defender. I love its uniqueness and what it represents. At times people will have difficulty with pronouncing it, but thats cool. Just teach him to correct people politely.
I just had my son on November 18 also my birthday my niece came up with all sorts of names out of all I chose Seth then she'said Nasir an I fell in love with It'so I named my son Nasir and middle name'seth I so love Nasir
I have a friend named Nasir and he's the coolest guy ever! He also has the most awesome name in the world. When people see us, they think,"Oh It's the two people with awesome names." because my name is Nsangi, so it is very unique, just like Nasir!
I dated a guy named Nasir, and he was evil and crazy. I think he had mental problems.
I spell my son's name Nasser. Most people pronounce it Na-ser. I have a friend from The Ivory Coast in Africa where French is the primary language and she makes It'sound beautiful.

I named my nephew Nasir. He is only 6 months so we havent yet gotten into that many problem. We usually have to help people with the pronunciation and they usually end up saying "NaZeer". We spell it N A S I R..and pronounce it "Nah-Seer". I love this name and so does my sister!
My sister named her child. She'spells it differently though. Her way is Nahsir. A lot of people dont pronounce it wrong. How to say it: Nah-sear. Nope havent met anyone else with this name. Although there is a famous 'rapper' by the name of Nas. His real name is Nahsir.
