Damaris is a female given name with Greek origins. It is derived from the Greek word "dama" meaning "heifer" or "young cow". In ancient Greek mythology, Damaris was a nymph who was beloved by Apollo, the god of music, poetry, and the sun.
The name Damaris is mentioned in the New Testament in the book of Acts, where it is used as the name of a woman who was converted to Christianity by the preaching of the apostle Paul. According to the Bible, Damaris was one of a few Athenians who became followers of Jesus Christ after hearing Paul speak on the Areopagus in Athens. The name Damaris is often associated with purity, grace, and strength of character.
Damaris has been used as a given name in English-speaking countries since the 17th century. It was especially popular in the Puritan communities of America during the 18th century, where it was often spelled "Dameris". The name experienced a decline in popularity in the 19th and early 20th centuries, but has seen a resurgence in recent years.
Some notable people with the name Damaris include Damaris Phillips, an American chef and television personality, and Damaris Lewis, an American model and actress. The name has also been used in literature, such as in the novel "Damaris" by Irish author Laurence Housman.
In addition to its religious significance, the name Damaris has also been associated with the natural world. The heifer or young cow, from which the name is derived, was a symbol of fertility, prosperity, and abundance in ancient Greece. In modern times, the name Damaris has been used for various plant and animal species, such as the Damaris Rose, a type of miniature rose, and the Damaris Skipper, a species of butterfly found in Central America.
The name Damaris has also been linked to the arts, particularly music and poetry. In the poem "Damaris" by Richard Lovelace, the titular character is described as a "fair and comely maid" who inspires the poet to write. The name has been used in several songs, such as "Damaris" by Patrick Wolf and "Damaris" by Prince Royce.
Overall, the name Damaris carries with it a rich history and varied cultural associations. Its Greek origins and biblical significance give it a timeless quality, while its links to nature and the arts lend it a sense of beauty and creativity.

My name is also Damaris. When I was younger I tried to have my kindergarden'teacher pronounce it as Daa - maa - reese, in a spanish pronunciation. Over time my teache's tongue slipped, and eventually my name became "Dom - are - iece". So now I go by the'second one. I do not mind it at all. The nickname that I go by is "Dom".
My name is Damaris, though many people pronounce it wrong. Instead of dah - mah - ris they say dah - mare - is and it gets really annoying because they can't remember it or know how to spell it. They usually spell it Damares or Dmaris or even Damris. I pronounce it with a hispanic accent. I love my name because of its uniqueness and It'seems more like The Maris. I don't use a nickname though I love Maris. If they can't say my name right, I let It'slide since i've gotten so used to it. My family says it correctly except for my brother, he'says it Da - mare - is.

Her father is from Panama, and we have always prounounced her name is spanish which is Da-Ma (as in mom for short)-ris (rolling the r) which is very hard for most people. I have got so tired of people mis- pronouncing her name that I prounounce it as Damn-a-ris at appointments and such.
