One might be surprised to learn that Edwin has had respectable places on the naming charts. This has been the case for more than a century. From 1880 to 1941, for 62 straight years, Edwin was among the top 100 most popular names for boys in the U.S. The average position of Edwin during those years was the 60th position. This is a very good and respectable position. However, by the middle of the century, some sort of started for Edwin. Although the trend for Edwin has been a downtrend for the past 70 years, the downtrend has not been very significant and rapid. Today, Edwin is somewhere among the top 200 most popular names for boys in the U.S. which is still a good position. When we compare it to a name like Edward, we can see that it has a more positive meaning. Edward means “protector of riches” while Edwin means “friend of riches”. Apart from that as it was mentioned Edwin is one of the few names that survived the Norman changes. Therefore, it would be great if we could keep the momentum going and save the name that our elders saved for us

Whenever I was in school everybody would get a laugh out of the teache's saying my name wrong. i've always loved my name and I wouldn't change it for the world. It's always been annoying when in a contest and the judges saying my first AND sadly my last name wrong as well. Nicknames people have gave me are Sabine, Sabby, Bina, and Beanie. My dad gave me my name after watching a movie and hearing the main character call his granddaughter his little Sabina. I live in Canada and have only met one other person with the name'sabina

I am the third son named after my father - strange to begin with - people always mistake me for an edward - i guess edwin is unusual enough today (in this homogenous society) to be a great name for a unique individual

The 14th most unpopular male name in Britain, behind a certain amount of other names character'stic of old men - such as Norman which is in first position on the male endangered list while Walter is second on the list, Percy is third, Ernest is fifth, Herbert is sixth, Frank is eighth, Arnold is ninth, and Leonard is 10th.

I am 85 and have hated this name'since the the 10 grade. I am called Ed by everyone I have met since then. If someone calls me Edwin they are either a relative or a VERY OLD acquaintance. For the pasrt 10 years I don't mind the name at all and laugh to myself by hearing the name. My mother was Scottish and tried to call me Edward but local BrIt'sh friends talked her out ot that common name. I have Always signed my name as Edwin. In reality it is just a name and does not connote anything about who I am, what I think and what my values are. I was born in the USA 9 yrs after my mother I'migrated and was raised with a vey strong BrIt'sh upbringing. But my mother never liked The UK. She finally was able to bring her entire family to the USA or Canada.

My name is Edwin and I happen'to be in my 20s. At first, I hated my name but I have grown to like It'since It's very unique. I think it matches me as an intelligent person plus I have never met someone else with my name yet.

I like my name well enough, the problem is the'stereotype. When people meet me I almost always get the "so You're Edwin" routine, like they're disappointed. Edwins are supposed to be academic or nerdy or BrIt'sh or some dang thing. I will say it makes a kind of solidarity for Ed's of all stripes, I once worked in a place where we had 3 so we had to figure out who got Ed (full name Edward) who got Eddie and I got Edwin so we could tell who was being paged on the PA. Now I work in a place with an Erwin and I can't tell you the number of times people have called me Erwin. Last thing, adding an A to a man's name to make it a woman's name is just wrong. Makes It'seem like you wanted a boy but are 'making do' with a girl. I didn't do that to my daughter, please don't do it to yours, make it a true, proud, stand on It's own name.

03/26/2023 13:32:54

My dad's name is Edwin, and he tells me he'd rate it "thumbs down." Personally, I like it. But he's had his name over 60 years, and wishes he'd legally changed it to "Ed" long ago. It's too often confused with Edward, and he's never actually gone by Edwin in his life - only Ed.

02/12/2023 18:47:58

An uncool name but not all Edwins are old men - some are only in their 40s or 50s but are usually called Ed or Eddie. Though it has the meaning of "prosperous friend", I don't think I'd name a son of mine Edwin. Edwina for a girl, on the other hand, sounds slightly better.
