Whenever I was in school everybody would get a laugh out of the teache's saying my name wrong. i've always loved my name and I wouldn't change it for the world. It's always been annoying when in a contest and the judges saying my first AND sadly my last name wrong as well. Nicknames people have gave me are Sabine, Sabby, Bina, and Beanie. My dad gave me my name after watching a movie and hearing the main character call his granddaughter his little Sabina. I live in Canada and have only met one other person with the name'sabina

I am the third son named after my father - strange to begin with - people always mistake me for an edward - i guess edwin is unusual enough today (in this homogenous society) to be a great name for a unique individual

I am 85 and have hated this name'since the the 10 grade. I am called Ed by everyone I have met since then. If someone calls me Edwin they are either a relative or a VERY OLD acquaintance. For the pasrt 10 years I don't mind the name at all and laugh to myself by hearing the name. My mother was Scottish and tried to call me Edward but local BrIt'sh friends talked her out ot that common name. I have Always signed my name as Edwin. In reality it is just a name and does not connote anything about who I am, what I think and what my values are. I was born in the USA 9 yrs after my mother I'migrated and was raised with a vey strong BrIt'sh upbringing. But my mother never liked The UK. She finally was able to bring her entire family to the USA or Canada.

I like my name well enough, the problem is the'stereotype. When people meet me I almost always get the "so You're Edwin" routine, like they're disappointed. Edwins are supposed to be academic or nerdy or BrIt'sh or some dang thing. I will say it makes a kind of solidarity for Ed's of all stripes, I once worked in a place where we had 3 so we had to figure out who got Ed (full name Edward) who got Eddie and I got Edwin so we could tell who was being paged on the PA. Now I work in a place with an Erwin and I can't tell you the number of times people have called me Erwin. Last thing, adding an A to a man's name to make it a woman's name is just wrong. Makes It'seem like you wanted a boy but are 'making do' with a girl. I didn't do that to my daughter, please don't do it to yours, make it a true, proud, stand on It's own name.

My dad's name is Edwin, and he tells me he'd rate it "thumbs down." Personally, I like it. But he's had his name over 60 years, and wishes he'd legally changed it to "Ed" long ago. It's too often confused with Edward, and he's never actually gone by Edwin in his life - only Ed.

An uncool name but not all Edwins are old men - some are only in their 40s or 50s but are usually called Ed or Eddie. Though it has the meaning of "prosperous friend", I don't think I'd name a son of mine Edwin. Edwina for a girl, on the other hand, sounds slightly better.
