Jay Name Origin and History

Additional description of the name Jay
Additional description of the name Jay

Jay developed as a short form for any male given name beginning with a J (James, Jason, Jacob) in the same tradition that Dee or Kay came to be. Today, this pet form has become an independently given name in its own right. The name was first used in the United States in honor of John Jay, one of the founders and the first Chief Justice (1745-1829). John Jay was an important historical figure among Americans. He helped institute some of the nation's earliest foreign policies, which sought to protect property rights and fought against human rights violations (he was a strong opponent of slavery from an early period). John Jay also co-wrote the Federalist Papers with Hamilton and Madison. Jay's last name is derived from the loud and colorful jaybird. Alternatively, Jay or Jai are also modern transliterations of 'Jaya', a Sanskrit word meaning 'victory'. Today, Jay is most fashionable in Scotland and Northern Ireland, where he ranks around #50 in terms of popularity.

Popularity

The Jay name has been used in the United States for more than two centuries in honor of one of our founding fathers, John Jay. In the late 1800s, Jay was a very popular choice among American parents, but the real height of his popularity came in the 1950s and '60s when he secured a spot on the Top 100 list for nearly 20 years (1953- 1970). Since the name dropped out of the Top 100 in the 1970s, it has been in a slow and steady decline ever since. As we have become the 21st century, Jay is seeing his lowest popularity ever. No doubt about it; Jay is a minimalist name. Per current fancy pants naming standards, many parents are avoiding this simple one-syllable bird. It is often heard that they prefer it as a middle name rather than a given first name. It's too plain or uninteresting compared to trendy boy names like Ethan, Jackson, or Aiden. However, what is wrong with Jay? Easy? Yes. But it's easy to say and easy to spell. You can't stop thinking about the jaybird, those noisy, colorful birds that light up the sky.

I love the name Jay. People always thinks It's short for Jason which is always funny trying to explain. My grandfathe's name was J.C. but when my father was born you couldn't use initials so they named him Jay Charles and my brother is Jay Charles Jr. and his soon to be son will be Jay Charles the third. The name Isn't real common most people use it as a nickname. It's simple and has been pretty steadily used for over a hundred years. And in my case has turned into a family name we all love.

you should be proud of your name. Beverley has a masculine origin, you should use that as your argument. Girls steal all the names anyway

This is my name and I love it. I personnally love the unique spelling of it, as well. It is difficult at times, though, when everyone automatically spells it Kelly, but it is something you get used to. I still wouldn't change the'spelling. I think it looks much nicer written out and you don't see it too often so it turns into a conversation piece when people find out how my name is spelled.

jay is a terrible name. It'stops just as it gets exciting. i have buddy called jay, he is mean, and i think he'should be renamed to B.E. to stop giving the name jay a bad reputation.

Well, I definitely love my name. The only thing is that if someone doesn't know you and they read it they can't say it; but if they hear it they can't spell it. That's the fun in it though c: Also the compliments you might get on your name are nice too.
