The ancient Roman masculine name Lucius was one of the most common personal names throughout Roman history. The name was often bestowed on children who were born at dawn when light first appears (explaining heavy use). A famous female name bearer, Saint Lucy of Syracuse, was an early 4th century saint whose cult and legend grew in the Middle Ages, which is when the name became popular. Ironically, Lucia is the patron saint of those who is blind, as she is said to be the 'way of light'. Born in the late 3rd century in Syracuse, Sicily, she turned to Christianity and refused her pagan husband. Rejected and furious, her husband-to-be turned the tables on the Roman anti-Christian powers that be. When her guards came to chase her, they were unable to move her body—she was so heavy that she was filled with the Holy Spirit (or so the legend goes). They weren't even able to burn it. Finally, the frustrated guards gouged her eyes out with a fork. She can take Lucia out of the light, but she cannot take the light out of Lucia. The French Lucille was adopted by the English-speaking world and has been in constant use for centuries. The notable bearer's name was Lucille Ball (1910-1989) a beloved American comedic actress. historical figures

Lucille Ball is arguably the greatest comedian of modern times. Born in Jamestown, New York on August 6, 1911, to a family that traces its American origins back to colonial days, Lucille Ball died on April 26, 1989, at age 78. Although she had a successful career Moderate in modeling, on Broadway, in film, and on radio, it is for her signature role as Lucy Ricardo in the groundbreaking 1950s television comedy series, I Love Lucy, that she will be forever and piously remembered. She and her husband, Cuban bandleader, and singer Desi Arnaz, revolutionized early television and changed the making of television series, with their innovations in cameras and insistence on filming in California instead of New York, filming that way before a live audience. It was also felt very strongly at the time that the public would never accept the redheaded, just Lucille Ball with an ethnic husband €“a mistake to think was immediately proven wrong. They reigned for years, and after her divorce, Lucille became a star in several other comedy series on her own, as well as being the operating head of Desilu Productions, eventually buying Desi Arnaz out for complete. Lucille and Desi had two children and divorced in 1960. She was married to her second husband, Gary Morton, from 1961 until her death. The recipient of countless honoraries and awards, she was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously by President George HW Bush in 1989. Hands down, though, the best award, we're sure you'd agree.

My husband and I are expecting our first child (a baby girl) in April. We have chosen the middle name Lucille because that was my Grandmother's name but my husband takes great pride in telling everyone we're naming her after BB King's guitar! :- )

when i was younger i was always asked about ricky (get it lucille ball) i used to find it very annoying! however as i grew older, i began to take pride in my name --- these days it is not very common; unlike the ashley's and nikki's of the world. not that there is anything wrong with those names however it is nice to be different
