I named my daughter makena after a beautiful town i visited in maui with my husband. not many have this name which is another reason i love it.
It's my name. I'm a guy. And I predate all your stats. This is all bogus, me thinks. If You're going by the Hawaiian use, It's gender neutral. This is more white washing. The island❤️s native culture was traditionally accepting of gender fluidity, Hawaii❤️s traditions were suppressed following the arrival of missionaries in the 1800s. There is no such thing as boy or girls name in Hawaiian culture. It's just a name. A traditional Hawaiian name is typically chosen based on the following: inoa po: name in the night; a name received in a dream inoa ho❤️ailona: name in a sign; a name received in the form of a vision, mystic sign, natural phenomenon inoa ❤️ulaleo: voiced name; a name heard inoa ho❤️omanao: commemorative name for an event or to honor a person inoa kupuna: a name handed down; of an ancestor inoa ewe: a name based on traits or personality
We were one of the firsts to name our son Zander. Now we hear of this name alot in the past 10 years
The name is often misspelled (Erie, Eric, Earl, Earle) and therefore mispronounced. It is also very hard for Chinese speakers (r and l together!). But I love the name- it is very close to unique and that worked out very well now that I am an adult (as a child, my parents and friends called me by my middle name)
Makena Beach is my favorite beach on Maui, after living there for 8 years we decided to name our first daughter after it. She is due in 4 weeks :)
