I named my son Tavares, and people usually hesitate before saying it the first time. "Tuh-VAH-ress" is how we pronounce it. Haven't met any other Tavares' yet, but he's only 11! I understand It's a fairly common Portuguese surname, a city in Florida, and the name of a disco group from the 70's.
The way I spell my name is Sabine. It's still pronounced the'same as Sabina, but this is the German spelling. My mom wanted to name me Cecelia when I was born in the hospital, but did'nt know how to spell it. Thank goodness, because I love my name! I only heard it around 5 times in my life and I am very close to 50yrs old. People always spelled it wrong. They would call me Serena, Selina, Sabrina. I feel special when I hear my name because you never hear it. Thank you, mom. "mutti"
