My parents named me Alysa because they wanted to call me "Aly" for short, but they thought that Alexandra and Allison were too common. I love my name, and I think It's beautiful, but i've been responding to the names Alissa, Alicia, Alice, Alisha, and even Alexa since I was 9 because EVERYONE that I encounter mispronounces it.
My grandmother thought "Alysa" (rhymes with Lisa) was a pretty and unique name: unfortunately, in reality no-one can pronounce it properly. Upon reading it (or even after hearing the name'spoken!) everyone assumes It's said as "Alyssa", "Aliza", "Alisha", or some other variant. In all my years, I have yet to meet someone who actually says it right without being corrected. I appreciate that It's unusual, but as a kid it really got on my nerves that nobody called me by my real name. What good is an uncommon name that everyone confuses with a more popular one❤️ It's hard on one's self-identity. On the other hand, a positive aspect is that it doesn't rhyme with (or look like) any insults. I got teased a lot less than other children'thanks to that.
I was named after an Alys (parents tacked an 'a' onto the end). Nobody can spell it and I frequently have to get documents and accounts updated because somebody tacked on an extra 's'. i've had it mispronounced in all imaginable ways from Alissa to Elijah and only rarely do people pronounce it correctly their first try. If You're considering this name, save your daughter a lot of trouble and just add a second 's'.
Lovely. I think I'll name my daughter Alysa Susanna once she is born.
