Brantley is the first name version of an English surname. In Old High German, “brant” meant “firebrand” which is why it is possible that it would have been given who had a bad temper. It is also possible that ths name was used to refer to a place that had burned down. Interestingly, in Olde English the same word means “steep, tall” while “lēah” meant “meadow, clearing”. Therefore it could have been a surname for someone who lived in a high meadow.
Another possibility is that Brantley is derived from “Brandr”, an Old Norse nickname which meant “sword”. In this case it must have come to England by Vikings. As a surname this name is not very common which is why all these theories are just assumptions and we have no concrete evince for them.
