I am a 41 year old female named Sylvan. I have never met anyone with the name, male or female, though I was chastised quite thoroughly once in N.Y. by an African man. He insisted that my name was singularly male and my father'should be ashamed of himself for having given it to a girl child. Yes, people usually pronounce it wrong, spell it wrong, insist on "re-naming" me (Sylvia, etc.) But for me, having a beautiful, rare and unusual name has been a wonderful life experience.
My son's name is Sylvan. he's 21 and now serving in Iraq. His name is derived from "sylvanus" which means "of the forest" in Latin. I love trees and have probably planted 100 or more trees so far in my life. i've read of a few guys named Sylvan in the U.S. but still haven't met one.
