This is not my name or that of anyone I know, but I'm giving it to a character in a book I am writing! I'm afraid I don't understand the choice of the pronunciation "Care-uh", given'the etymology of the name. It is a Latin/Italian word (and Gaelic as othe's have said), it means " dear one, darling" and is pronounced "Car-uh." I suppose there is a precedent in the now old-fashioned pronunciation of Sharon and Karen as " Share-un" and " Care-un" (or perhaps this was only i England, where I'm from?) but still, I think Cara should be " Car-uh" and I am suprised some people choose to pronounce it the other way. Their prerogative, of course!
RuBBER (best bestest friend forever) is called Alia. She is the only person called Alia in my school and I think it is very unique.

My name is Alia and It's true a lot of people ask how to pronounce it, but I don't mind that. I'm 30 so I grew up when Jennifer's and Heather's and Crystal's were popular. However I grew to love my name and be thankful my parents were more inter'sting and creative. I get many, many compliments on it. It's different, but not too awkward and It's feminine without being prissy.
Im 18, I love my name, it is beautiful and unique, some mispronounce, by saying Ayla but it never annoy me. Still love it. Btw it means the highness and honor. In arabic it is usualy used to say "Alia in knowledge", and it means the most and highst knowledge you can reach :)
